Investment case

Chemaf is an established copper-cobalt producer which has produced over 275,000 tonnes of copper and 50,000 tonnes of cobalt hydroxide from its Etoile Mine over the last 20 years. Chemaf has embarked on an ambitious expansion of its Etoile Mine (known as “Etoile Phase 2”) and the construction of a new greenfield mine, Mutoshi. These projects will collectively produce, at their peak, more than 75,000 tonnes per annum of copper and 20,000 tonnes per annum of cobalt hydroxide with significant extension potential through further drilling which could see Mutoshi’s mine life extend beyond 20 years. With copper and cobalt critical to supporting the global energy transition, Chemaf is making an important contribution to global decarbonisation.

Combined, the two projects represent a capital investment of US$660 million in the DRC. Both Etoile, Phase II and Mutoshi are anticipated to be completed and commissioned in Q1 2024. Established in 2001 as a third-party producer of copper cathode and cobalt hydroxide concentrate, we have since grown into one of the DRC’s most entrenched mining brands and trusted social development partners. Chemaf Resources is a subsidiary of the Chemaf Group, a privately-owned company founded by our Chairman, Shiraz Virji, who has been based in the DRC for nearly three decades. Initially establishing a successful presence in healthcare and pharmaceuticals through Shalina Healthcare Ltd three decades ago, Shiraz transitioned to the mining industry with the creation of the Chemaf Group in 2001. The DRC Government owns 5% of Chemaf SA.

Leadership

Shiraz Virji

Entrepreneur Shiraz Virji founded Chemaf in 2001, having seen the opportunity at a time when the DRC was privatising the mining industry. Acquiring several mining concessions in the DRC paved the way for Chemaf’s first processing facilities which formed the start of Chemaf’s growth strategy. Shiraz has wide commercial and entrepreneurial experience, having started his career in Kenya in the wood carvings business, and subsequently moving to the UK in 1971 to launch and grow a wholesale cash and carry business in handicrafts and gift items. In 1981, Shiraz formed a pharmaceutical enterprise in India which began his association with the DRC, as a primary region to which the business exported generic medicines. He has lived in the DRC for many years.
